Writer, author, scribe and pathfinder, Dorothy Sander navigates life’s challenges by writing. On a good day, she leaves a trail for others in need a spark for their own self-discovery journey in her published writings. The journey is fundamentally a spiritual one although you will find it steeped in psychology and common sense.
Even as a child she looked for a way through her difficulties, rather than around or away from them. She often saw the destination even before she arrived. An Intuitive, a Sensitive and an Empath, her inner world is her go to place where she finds comfort, courage and more questions than can ever be answered.
POET
Poetry drew Dorothy to the written word. She reached for its power to illuminate the inner life beginning with her first poem at the age of seven. The symbolic depth poetry provides gave her the potent avenue of expression she sought. Through rhyme and rhythm, metaphor and simile, Sander wrote through life, poem by poem, journal by journal, essay by essay.
At the age of 25, after graduating from college, she entered the Master of Divinity program at Princeton Theological Seminary. There, she continued her spiritual journey and first encountered the teachings of Carl Jung under the tutelage of Dr. James E. Loder. Her concentrated studies with Rev. Dr. Seward Hiltner was in the field of Pastoral Theology and Counseling. Committed to the idea of living an authentic life, she sought a tangible expression of the spiritual in the real. Like many pathfinders, it was a circuitous journey!
ENTREPRENEUR
Ordination was never her goal, and when she graduated she went to work for non-profits, then a publisher in marketing. At thirty she married, and at thirty-two, her first son was born. Two and half years later, her second son was born. She left her career behind and was committed to staying at home with her children. To help make ends meet and to ensure her job as a stay-at-home Mom, she launched a series of entrepreneurial ventures, including a used baby furniture and consignment store, direct sales, and an eBay business. Ultimately, together with her husband they began a home improvement business that they maintained for more than twenty years.
TRANSFORMATION GUIDE
At fifty, however, change was afoot. As she navigated the years of caring for aging parents, managing an empty nest, menopause, and other personal challenges, her desire to write and explore the deeper things in life re-emerged. In the process she founded The Aging Abundantly Community where she still blogs on aging and the transformation process. In addition, she has written and published three books, too many articles to count, poems and short stories.
She is currently working on a memoir, a book of poetry and several short stories.
